Express Capture their 8th National Championship

The Brampton Express survived their defensive breakdowns and Mike Hedden had a goal and an assist to lift Express to a 4-2 win over the Penetanguishene Blazers on Sunday, July 29.

Mike Porter, Fred Pereira, and Shawn Hannon would also score for the National Champions and Pereira would add two assists in the gold medal game.

The Blazers, who had 26 shots, dominated the play most of the game, but allowed untimely goals on rushes in which two players went to the same area of the floor in their own end and left the eventual goal scorer wide open on blasts by Tony Monteiro and Hedden.

Greg St. Amant said afterward, ‘defensively, we have to do a better job of sorting out our own end as they don’t need much space and time to hurt a team.’

Lenny Robillard and Brad Baum would score for the Blazers who applied relentless pressure from the mid way mark of the first throughout the balance of the game as Di Gironimo and the Express defence bent, but would not break.

"Against a team like that, that's a ball control team, they're going to possess the ball," said Express Assistant Captain, James Mentis.  "That's okay with us as long as we keep them to the outside. When we got in trouble was when we let them inside with their speed and size."

Robillard’s goal would cut the lead to one early in the second period and would lift the Blazers bench.  "We were in pretty good shape after the first period," said St. Amant.

However, the Express would hold off the Blazers offence for much of the second period.  Hannon’s goal was the back breaker as it gave the Express a 3-1 lead with a power-play goal minutes after the Blazers cut the lead to one as he shoved the loose ball from a goal-mouth scramble under the sprawled netminder.

The win gives the Express an unprecedented eight championships in the teams twenty one year history.
